    What is a KVM switch?
KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, and Mouse. A KVM switch is a connectivity device that allows multiple laptops, computers, or hosts to share a multitude of USB peripherals and monitors. It allows the user to easily switch between hosts with a press of a button, without the need to unplug any cables, creating a highly efficient and effective work station.

How does a KVM switch work?
A KVM switch works by allowing you to select which host has access to the devices connected to the switch. When you select host "1", then all the monitors, and USB peripherals that are connected to the switch will be accessible to host "1", and inaccessible to host "2". When you select host "2", all monitors and USB peripherals will be disconnected from host "1" but will instead now be accessible to host "2".

Can I use this KVM switch with dual monitors?
Yes. The Cable Matters USB-C KVM Switch allows you to connect two USB-C hosts to share two monitors on all Operating Systems except Mac OS with resolutions up to 4K@60hz on each monitor. The switch supports only one single external display up to 4K@60Hz resolution on MacOS and can only output the identical display up to 4k@60Hz resolution even if two monitors are connected at the same time. Please refer to the following illustration for the resolution support on all Operating Systems excluding Mac OS.

Does this KVM switch work with all USB-C ports?
No. This KVM switch is compatible only with USB-C ports that support video. Video support requires hosts with DisplayPort (DP) Alt Mode support. Without DP Alt Mode support, this KVM switch will function as a USB switch.

Does this KVM switch work with all Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 ports?
    Yes.

Does this KVM switch support 4K resolution?
Yes. The Cable Matters USB-C KVM Switch supports up to 8K@30hz with a single monitor connected to the DisplayPort port. With a single monitor connected to the HDMI port, the maximum supported resolution is 4K@60hz.
